Jobs for the Garden in March

Spring is most certainly in the air and emerging from a cold and blustery winter are fresh buds on the trees and the eruption of shoots from the warming soil. There is no better time to get out in the garden!

Jobs in the Garden

  • Protect new spring shoots from slugs.
  • Plant summer flowering bulbs.
  • Cut back Cornus (dogwood).
  • Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials.
  • Top dress containers with fresh compost.
  • Deal with any new weed growth early.

Jobs in the Vegetable Garden

  • Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes.
  • Open the greenhouse doors and vents on warm days.
  • Start preparing your beds for the growing season by digging in a thin layer of compost.
  • Start to direct sow vegetable seeds such as Carrots, Radishes and Lettuce in greenhouses or under cloches.
